A Space for Relationships

Pressures in today’s world are everywhere and in business — perhaps even more so than ever, though we often do not even notice them anymore. We are all constantly exposed to the possibility of having to make decisions by evening. If you are sincere, you can wish someone all the best for their birthday in the morning, send them off from the company by afternoon (or even worse), and by evening already be preparing everything needed to replace them.

Communication under pressure is therefore not an exception. It has become our reality every day and almost a defining feature of modern media, response times, internal dilemmas, and the endless flow of information. All of this often makes us lose sight of responsibility, accountability, and the question of what we ultimately leave behind us.

Under pressure, people sometimes become weaker. We often rush to react more quickly and less thoughtfully, focus more on the response itself than on the context. The weight of the moment, the way we operate, becomes part of everyday life. When no one has time to think. And when the kind word you intended to say, or the acknowledgment you could have given, no longer arrives.

In everything that happens instantly, we sometimes almost automatically stop responding at all. If we take the time to think, we already seem late. Late for what? For the fact that a second before we sent an email.

I believe it is important to preserve humanity in people, as well as the awareness that words and actions have consequences. And perhaps not forget that, on the other side of communication, there is still a person, not an algorithm, no matter how useful it may be (and perhaps the most important) part of our work: building relationships.

This year’s PR2 conference theme therefore addresses precisely these pressures — from crisis communication, communicating between people and within organizations, leadership in uncertainty. Above all, it reminds us that communication and the environment around us are not pressures in themselves, but an opportunity to create more understanding, trust, space for dialogue, and stronger relationships.
