In a world where everything is measured, optimized, automated, and streamlined, how someone feels when they receive our communication is not irrelevant. Most of our messages today travel across screens – email, messaging apps, in-app notifications, midday “pings”... Fast, convenient, efficient. And that’s exactly why it’s all the more important not to lose our sense of tone, context, and connection. Not to forget that there’s always a person on the other side. And not to forget to take time for human contact – in person. The tone of voice, eye contact, a moment of silence – all of that is communication. The kind we remember. The kind that builds trust. And the kind that can mean more than the most polished PowerPoint presentation.
Kindness, warmth, respect – these are not “soft” values. They are the firm foundation of quality relationships. In a business built on trust and collaboration, they may even be the most strategic ones.
In truth, everything we communicators do is interpersonal. Even when we prepare communication strategies, write speeches, design campaigns or manage crisis situations, in the end, we are always communicating with people. And people want to be heard, understood, and respected.
If we kept that in mind at all times, our (work)day – if not the world – could be a kinder, better place.
